Behind the Mic: The Good and the Bad 🎤

Caitlin and I have been out on the Podcast circuit again, guesting on some popular podcasts that will be out soon. Until those episodes are released, I thought I would revisit some of the other podcast interviews we’ve done – the good, bad, and the ugly.

🎙️Bigger Pockets Money Show: What if High Expenses Extinguish Your FIRE?

The post-production edit was a bit of a surprise to Caitlin, who shared with the hosts her journey to, and strategies for financial freedom. When the final cut came around, they had twisted this into a story about how she might have blown up her financial freedom by relocating to a Very High Cost of Living (VHCOL) area.

It’s still a great listen about Caitlin’s journey building a lucrative real estate portfolio without she or her husband ever having high-paying jobs, but it ‘weaponized’ financial freedom into a black and white issue rather than reflecting on the importance of creating a balance between lifestyle and money (which Caitlin wrote a great article about last week).

What’s really funny is that I’m actually the one who has recently ‘blown up’ my financial freedom, so maybe I should inquire about a guest spot! 🤣

🎙️The RealWealth Show with Kathy Fettke: A Real Estate Investor’s Wake Up Call after Paying 6-figures in Taxes

I met one of the Investor Relations team members from RealWealth at a conference, and after hearing a bit of my background - growing up lower-class in a small Appalachian town and eventually reaching financial freedom - he invited me to share my story on their podcast. While we touched on my journey, most of the conversation ended up diving into tax-saving strategies. Kathy really leaned into her role as Devil’s Advocate, challenging me on whether it's ethical to take full advantage of the tax code. I think I held my own in the moment, and my answer now to that question is even more polished thanks to this interview!

🎙️How Did They Do It? With Seyla and Aileen: Building Rapport in Real Estate Syndication

Bonavest Capital invited Caitlin on their podcast to share her experience investing in real estate syndications and to walk through the key questions every investor should ask before jumping in. This was recorded before the commercial real estate market started to unravel, so I think we both have about a million additional questions we’d ask now before investing. But it’s still a solid, informative overview if you’re exploring syndications.

🎙️The Real Estate 101 Podcast (formerly the Wake Up Call Podcast): Empowering Women Towards Financial Independence

I had met Paul David Thompson at the CampFI Texas retreat in 2023, where he invited me to be a guest on his (at the time) Wake Up Call podcast. We had a really good conversation about why it’s so important for women in particular to become empowered around their finances and start achieving financial autonomy. There’s so much that is unexpected – job loss, divorce, family issues, sickness, death, etc. that can leave women high and dry if they aren’t prepared financially. I really appreciated him having me on to discuss why we do what we do at Rising Femme Wealth and why it’s so important to us to help other women rise to their financial power.

We hope you enjoy these until our new appearances start coming out! And back to my note earlier about ‘blowing up my financial freedom’ – I’m working on a newsletter article on what happened and how to deal with large unexpected expenses, so stay tuned!

What I'm Reading

I read a lot of financial books, but I’ll let you in on a little secret – I also really enjoy romance novels! But not just any romance – I need my fluff romances with a strong, intelligent female lead.

In honor of my beach trip later this summer, here are some great romance ‘beach reads’ that I’ve enjoyed - for those rare occasions when you’d rather not read about Roth IRA conversions. 🤪

📕 The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

📘 Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

📗 The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

📙 Is She Really Going Out with Him? by Sophie Cousens

📔 Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Happy Summer Reading! 🏖️

Caitlin's Corner Finance is Different for Women. I still remember the moment I realized something was off. A male coworker (let’s call him "Ted") had just been promoted. Again. Ted and I were friends, which is why I knew some details about his background: lower GPA, less relevant experience, and average performance on our shared project. Meanwhile, I and two other qualified women on the team, who had worked longer, harder, and better, were overlooked. When I asked my manager what Ted was...
